Nasality and Speech If you are one of those who speaks with a twangy or high-pitched voice, excessive nasality may be the problem. Many people suffer from some sort of nasal related impediment but there is hope. One of the reasons this happens to certain people is because of a lifelong habit and the way your soft palate is constructed. Thankfully, you can get past this problem with some hard work and practice. The first thing to do is to understand what is happening when you speak. When you take a breath, the soft palate is lowered in your mouth so air can get from your lungs and back out. When a person says something, the palate lifts up and closes off the nasal passage. For some people when they speak the nasal consonants, the palate does not work as it was intended and you produce that high-pitched voice that you may recognize. To see what it being described, make the m sound and just continue to hum. While you are humming the m sound, pinch your nose closed and see what happens. Immediately the sound has stopped. This is where the problem lays for those who deal with excessive nasality. If you wish to see if you have the nasality tendency, try saying the following phrase while pressing your nose closed; 'the civics class agreed that illegal deeds were outrageous.' If you can say it without feeling any pressure or tension, you are in good shape. If you did feel some tension, you may have a small amount of nasality tendencies. The way to beat this problem is to practice saying things that have a high level of nasality in them so that you can exercise the soft palate and help your mouth to learn to change the way it operates. If you can teach your tongue to relax and lie against the floor of the mouth, you will have a better chance of dealing with the nasality. If you can devote several hours to practice, you will be able to hear the difference in almost no time. People place a lot of creditability on how you speak and how your voice sounds. This may not be fair but it is how things work most places. A speaker, manager, broadcaster, or entertainer can have big problems if they suffer from excessive nasality. Women suffer from this problem often more than men do although the nasality makes them sound younger. This can be good or bad depending on the individual. If you hope to beat this problem you will need to put in some work and you should consider hiring a speech therapist or expert to provide you with the extra knowledge you seek. |
